Log No 198. Fri 6th Dec 2013 - Colwyn Bay to Conwy, 15 miles (3055 miles walked)
Looking back to Colwyn Bay |
Leaving Prestatyn the road to Rhyl was closed, presumably because of yesterday's weather, so the drive took a bit longer and didn't start walking until 08.00.
There was only a bit of wind this morning and the tide was out, I had no problem walking along the promenade now.
At Rhos-on-Sea I came across St Trillo's Chapel, he was a 6 century Celtic Saint, which is possibly the smallest chapel in Britain with only room for a congregation of 6.
A notice on the gate said it holds weekly services! While I was there a couple walked into it so I went in for a look, the single room was lit up with candles and there were 2 other folk in there already. They were about to hold a service, it was 08.30, and would I like to join them? I declined their offer, explaining what I was doing and they gave me a donation of £7.
On my way out another 3 people were just going in and then the priest came behind them.
At Penrhyn Bay the promenade is built higher than the road and has a flood gate in it.
The sea wall may have kept the water out but a lot of stones from the shore had been thrown over onto the road below.
Footpath up Little Ormes Head |
The headland of Little Orme was a welcome change, I haven't had to climb a hill for quite a while and I had good views from the top.
Llandudno & Great Ormes Head |
Coming down from the hill it was back on the road into Llandudno.
The sea front was all large hotels and they seemed to be quite busy as there were a few tour buses loading or unloading guests.
The road round Great Orme |
Great Ormes Head had a road all the way round it, it was a toll road, one way and no caravans or campers allowed.
There were a few joggers on it, it makes a good 5 mile circuit.
Back round to the west side of Llandudno I followed the signs for the cycleway but I don't know when a cycle was last able to use it.
At one time it was probably a good tarmac route but the sea has badly damaged most of it and rocks covered quite a lot of it too.
The A55 goes under the River Conwy but I went over the bridge into Conwy, walking past Conwy Castle.
It was 13.00 and I had done 15 miles, there was a train at 13.48 but when I checked at the unstaffed station the next train was 14.20 but not expected until 14.40, there is obviously still problems on the line.
The next station along the route was 2 hours walking so I had an early finish and got a bus back.
