Log No 204. Thu 12th Dec 2013 - Aberdaron to Llanbedrog, 21 miles (3158 miles walked)

Looking to Porth Neigwl
The transport was not so good for today and I had to take the 07.05 bus, when I got on it the driver said "This is a first! I've never had anyone going to Aberdaron at this time before", I was the only person on the bus all the way.

It was 07.40 when I left the bus and still black dark but with the next bus 2 hours later I couldn't guarantee finishing the walk in time.

I had to stay for a good half hour before I could see the map, and footpath signs, properly.

The coastline at Porth Neigwl
It was a poor weather forecast for today and it had started raining while I was on the bus.

It wasn't overly windy but the low cloud and mist spoiled the views.

The first couple of hours was inland a bit using footpaths through fields and open land, with the poor visibility I needed to use my compass today.

When I eventually got to the coast at Porth Neigwl I expected to walk along the beach but I couldn't find a safe way down the cliffs.

Erosion had also lost the clifftop path so I was directed back onto the road for a good while before finding a signpost heading back to the cliff. I had 3 or 4 fields to go through and lost the route but I just needed to keep walking into the wind & rain until I reached the cliff.

The coastline round Porth Ceiriad from the headland
I found a way down the cliff and walked on the beach to the headland of Mynydd Cilan.

I had been on the go for 4 hours so I took my first break before climbing up onto this small headland, it wasn't very high and there was a good grassy path round the top.

The beach at Machroes
There was no route along the clifftop round Porth Ceiriad so it was minor roads and footpaths to the village of Machroes.

Then a track through the golf course took me into Abersoch.

It was 14.20 and I only had 3 more miles to the next village, Llanbedrog, where I was catching the bus at 16.15.

Llanbedrog
There had been no let up in the weather but for most of the time the rain was on my side or behind me.

Coming out of Abersoch I got onto the sandy beach. The whole of this small bay was full of holiday chalets.

Woodland Path
At the end of the beach I had another small headland to climb up and walk around.

The poor weather didn't do justice to the views or the descent through an old woodland at Plas Glyn-y-weddw.

I got into Llanbedrog at 15.45 after a rather damp 21 miles.
