Log No 247. Sun 16th Feb 2014 - Minehead to Porlock, 9 miles (3758 miles walked)

Mick in Minehead
With no transport from Bridgport today we were stuck, the only public transport we could find near our base at Minehead was one bus at 11.35 from Porlock to Minehead.

Not wanting to sit around all day when it was a good forecast we decided to walk a section out of sequence and do the 9 miles from Minehead to Porlock today instead of Wednesday.

Dave at start of SWCP, Minehead
To ensure we had plenty of time to make the bus we left at 07.30.

The South West Coast Path is 630 miles long and goes between Minehead and Poole, this will be the third time I will have walked between Minehead and John o'Groats.

Mick in Moor Wood, Minehead
We walked along the promenade passing the sculpture marking the start/end of the SWCP and onto the footpath into Moor Wood.

After days of walking on the flat the path climbed, steeply at times, through the wood and onto the hill.

Dave on SWCP over the hill towards Porlock
The path stayed on the flatish top of the ridge for three miles between North Hill and Bossington Hill, reaching a height of 300m.

It is a good path and well used by hikers, dog walkers and horse riders.

There was a "Rugged alternative coast path" running along the side of the hill nearer the sea but we stayed on the higher, easier path.

Mick & Dave on Bossington Hill
We had a steep descent from Bossington Hill with a good view of Porlock and the coastline to Foreland Pt.

At the bottom of the hill the path turned into Bossington and we followed the road for a further mile to Porlock, arriving at 10.20.

With plenty of time before the bus was due we had tea and a toasted teacake in a Tea Shop.

There was some doubt as to whether there was a scheduled bus or not, my phone said there was but the timetable at the bus stop made no mention of any buses on a Sunday. However we were reassured when someone else came to wait for the bus and it duly arrived.
