Log No 276. Sun 6th Apr 2014 - Carlyon Bay to Fowey, 11 miles (4200 miles walked)

Mick on the dunes at Par
There was no change in the weather as we rose to another misty day, the campsite owner said it would be like this all day but with an additional "blob" of rain.

We dressed for the occasion by doubling up the waterproof jackets. For hardly ever having wet feet over the last year I am now having damp feet each time it is wet, either my shoes have stopped being waterproof or my gaiters are letting the water through to the top of my socks and so into the shoes.

Mick was packed up and ready to go well before me, I eventually got my act together and we set off at 08.45.

Polkerris
It was straight onto the clifftop path to Par, the big sandy bay at Carlyon would be attractive but for the long time abandoned leisure complex on the beach. Plans are in hand to do something about it.

After crossing the dunes at Par it was back onto the slippery coast footpath to Polkerris, this group of buildings at the small bay is at the end of a steep road.

We stopped here for a hot drink, Bob had just opened up his water activity centre and snack bar, not that he was expecting much business today, he had already cancelled a sailing session because of the weather & sea.

You wouldn't think to look at it but Bob said there have been 800 people on the beach here at one time, the tide must go out a long way!

Dave on the footpath to Gribbin Head
Leaving Polkerris we turned south to make for Gribbin Head, we were now more head on into the rain, I think we were having a good bit more than "a blob" of rain.

The coastline from Gribbin Head
After rounding the headland the weather was behind us, there were a surprising number of people out in this weather, and not just dog walkers.

Mick on the footpath to Fowey
Although the coastline was still up and down it wasn't as bad as the last two days but the wet conditions made it difficult to keep on your feet on the slopes, Mick slipped twice.

Dave at Fowey
We got into Fowey for 13.00 and the smell of cornish pasties proved too tempting for us to resist.

The SWCP uses a ferry to get across the river to Polruan but we were going to have to walk the 16 miles round, but that would be tomorrow, we were having a short day today and finishing just a mile up the road at the campsite at Penhale Farm.

11 wet miles today.

It is still raining as I'm writing this log at 20.30 and is forecast to continue tomorrow.
