Log No 356. Wed 25th Jun 2014 - Shepherd's Port to King's Lynn, 18 miles (5438 miles walked)
The footpath round Snettisham Reserve |
High tide had been 2 hours earlier, which was just as well because there was no public access on the embankment in front of the row of houses. There was enough shore exposed for me to walk below the embankment and get round to the footpath at the boundary of the Snettisham Bird Reserve.
The sandy shore had ended and it was back to salt marsh again with an embankment all the way into King's Lynn. The map showed a footpath along the top of this, though it wasn't marked as a public footpath.
I walked round the end of the reserve then followed the grassy footpath to the embankment. Unfortunately the access gate had a "Private" sign on it, it didn't say "No Public Access" but I thought I'd better take an inland route.
To say I was disappointed was an understatement as it would now be all road walking to King's Lynn.
The Library, King's Lynn |
Needless to say I didn't enjoy the roads, they were busy with very little verge. I did get some respite on a short section of bridleway and once I had got to South Wootton I was more or less in King's Lynn and there was pavements.
South Gate, King's Lynn |
This last mile was by far the worst, there was no easy pedestrian access on to it from the complex of roundabouts and then it was hardly safe to walk along.
I arrived at the campsite at 15.00 having done 18 miles.
