Log No 146. Tue 1st Oct 2013 - Wemyss Bay to Ardrossan, 20 miles (2268 miles walked)

Wemyss Bay
Another sunny morning as I set off on the main road through Wemyss Bay.

The ferry to Rothesay, Isle of Bute was just about to leave.

Once I had gone past the last of the houses in Skelmorlie the pavement ended and knowing that the road between here and Largs was narrow and with no verges I turned off at Meigle and went inland a bit to use a minor road.

Ferry leaving Great Cumbrae Island
It just so happens that this road is also the Ayrshire Coastal Path route, obviously a much safer alternative to the main road.

I don't know how long this coastal path has been in existence but it isn't shown on my maps.

Largs & the ferry
This minor road was at a higher level on the side of the hill which gave me some better views.

Largs Viking
Largs seemed very busy and there were a couple of vikings on the sea front to welcome folk.

I called into Nicolson Maps for a chat and a drink of tea with Robin.
Nicolson Maps is Scotland's largest independent map company and they produce their own range of maps, I've done a bit of work for them in the past.

Fairlie
I walked along the sea front out of Largs, passing the Pencil Monument and picking up the Coastal Path again.

Redshank
The path was along the shore at Fairlie then by the side of the main road to the Hunterston roundabout.

From here it was followed the road round the outside of Hunterston Power Station.

Hunterston Power Station
There seemed to be some odd wave actions just offshore from the Station.

Water Outlet
As I got nearer I decided it must be from an underwater pipe from the works discharging water.

Portencross
After the works there was a grassy footpath to the picnic site at Portencross.

I finished off my lunch here just as the rain came on.

Staying on or by the shore I went by West Kilbride golf course then up onto the pavement along the side of the main road.

It was 15.30 as I came into the start of Ardrossan and just as I approached a bus stop along came a bus. I didn't think twice and jumped on it to get back to the camper.

Public transport is a lot easier now as I only need to use one bus.

I drove ahead to the caravan site in Ayr where I will be based for a couple of days.
