Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Tenby to Llanmadoc (40)
3523 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 230. Thu 30th Jan 2014 - Carmarthen to Burry Port, 19 miles (3523 miles walked)

Footbridge at Carmarthen
With me having parked overnight in Carmarthen I had an extra hour in bed and started walking at 08.15.

My planned route to Burry Port was 22 miles and I had a choice of train or bus to get back here.

Although it was cloudy it was quite bright and I hoped for a dry day as I crossed over the River Towy on the footbridge.

Footpath through wood
For the first 8 miles to Ferryside my route choice just happened to coincide with the Wales Coast Path.

It was the cycleroute out of Carmarthen to Croesyceiliog and then a good mix of farm roads, footpaths and tracks following the River Towy.

A fine set of horns
The route was a bit away from the river and generally quite high above it.

On one of the tracks I came round a corner and disturbed a buzzard and it flew off a short distance, I looked in the hedge and saw a carcass of a small rabit it had been eating.

I didn't need any cliffs to tell me what type the underlying rock was, the deep, squelchy, red brick coloured mud told me I was on sandstone.

Looking across R Towy to Llansteffan
It was a very still morning with no traffic noise but the cloud gradually thickened and it became decidedly cooler.

The railway line ran right alongside the river and the path dropped down to it just before Ferryside.

Coming into Kidwelly
From Ferryside I stayed on the minor road while the WCP went inland for a bit up the side of the hill.

After passing through Kidwelly I was unable to follow my (and the WCP) through the forest, the cycleway was closed due to forest operations and the route was redirected inland on minor roads and the course of the dismantled railway to Pembrey and I got Burry Port earlier than expected at 14.30, only having done 19 miles.

I took the train back to Carmarthen and this turned out to be a free ride as the conductor, who had seen me board the train, never came to collect my fare.

It is supposed to be poor weather again tomorrow with a lot of rain and a high tide.
