It was a pity that you had already left before my visit to Orkney as I would have loved to shake your hand and wished you luck. I am telling the Reading branch about your trip today so I hope that they will support you. (by Kathie Smallwood)

Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Start - Withernsea to Redcar (1)
53 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 3. Mon 1st Apr 2013 - Flamborough to beyond Filey, 16 miles (53 miles walked)

Bempton Cliffs
It was a cold night again, I slept in all my clothes. Mick's sleeping bag has a comfort rating of -14c while mine, which is lighter, is only -2c.

We left at 8.30 again but there was no sun and for a change I was feeling the cold more than Mick, no shorts today.

Getting back to the coast we followed the path along Bempton Cliffs watching Gannets carrying nesting material. Apparently these cliffs are heaving with birds during the breeding season and we passed quite a few bird watchers carrying tripods.

Speeton Cliffs
The cliffs gave way to steep slopes near Speeton, and seeing a signpost showing a path nearer the coast to Filey we decided to take it.

After following it for 5 minutes through thick undergrowth we changed our minds and returned to the signpost to continue on the path along the top of the slopes.

The beach to Filey
Finding our way through another holiday park we picked up a footpath to Hunmanby Gap then walked along the beach to Filey where we had a mug of tea in a cafe before heading to Tescos to stock up.

Dave on Filey Brigg looking to Flamborough
Back to the sea front we walked to the end of the promenade and followed the well worn path out to the end of Filey Brigg.

It was 14.30 but the length of our days walk is governed by available campsites so today was not going to be a long walk.

We were now on the Cleveland Way and it was only going to be a short walk to the campsite.

The Cleveland Way
The site we came to was part of a big holiday park and priced accordingly, £25 for a pitch, this could be an expensive trip.

At least there was a pub to sit in to write up the log in comfort, 2 hours lying down in the tent trying to type this up is not easy.

There had been no sun today but it was dry for the 16 miles covered.

Thanks for your emails, comments and donations, they are much appreciated.
