Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Toscaig to Corran (16)
1432 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 90. Tue 23rd Jul 2013 - Lochcarron to Reraig, 25 miles (1432 miles walked)

Looking down Loch Carron
It was a peaceful night in the old coniferous forest, it was silent.
Your ears become attuned to the slightest noise and your brain goes into overdrive wondering what made it, a tree branch creaking, the sudden snap of a twig or a snuffling noise.

I left the tent door open so I could see out but I never saw anything moving.

I was away by 08.20 and when I was out of the trees and onto the road realised there was quite a strong breeze, it didn't seem to last long and although the sun wasn't clear of the clouds yet it was again very warm.

Strome Ferry
There's not much room on the south side of Loch Carron with the road and the railway having to squeeze between the high cliffs and the loch.

Because I had planned to be at a campsite last night and ending up nowhere near a water supply I was almost out of water, fortunately there was plenty cascading down the cliffs to fill up my water bottles.

The road was very up and down with good views from the high points.

Plockton
I left the main road just after Strome Ferry taking the scenic route to Plockton.

The sun was out now but as the "scenic" route was through the trees I at least had some shelter if not the view.

At Duncraig Castle I took a footpath into Plockton crossing the railway line 3 times in the process.

My aim was to wild camp just outside Plockton and I thought to treat myself and went into the Plockton Inn to have a 3 course meal.

I left the Inn at 15.00 and went to the shop to get something for breakfast.

The shop had nothing suitable so I decided to press on and get to the campsite (I knew this one existed) at Reraig, a night earlier than planned.

Diurinis
After leaving Plockton I came to Diurinis, a few houses along the road.

It's not the place to live if you're feared for cattle as Highland Cattle were free to roam anywhere.

The railway line hugs the coastline but the road cuts inland a bit before returning to the coast at Badicaul.

I got to Kyle of Lochalsh at 17.20 and called into the Mace shop, another shop with minimal choice, and got just enough to see me through to breakfast.

I was beginning to get tired and there was still 4 miles to go.

If I had planned to do 25 miles today it would have been okay but having to walk an extra 3 hours takes it out of you.

Looking back to Kyle of Lochalsh
I arrived at the campsite at 18.30 and after pitching the tent took a much needed shower.

I'm meeting Mick back in Kyle of Lochalsh on Thursday night which gives me 2 days to get some clothes washed.
