Log No 228. Tue 28th Jan 2014 - Lydstep to Pendine, 16 miles (3481 miles walked)

I drove into Tenby, caught the bus back to Lydstep and started walking at 09.05. With only 16 miles to Pendine I would have plenty of time to catch the 16.30 bus to Tenby.

The MOD had red flags up and sentries posted on the small headland at Penally so I had to come inland onto the main road.

The first footpath I tried was waterlogged but the next one was okay and took me through the golf course and into Tenby.

From here into Saundersfoot the path was mostly through woodland and made a pleasant change.

The day was a mixture of showers with some sunny intervals and with not a lot of wind it was warm enough to only wear a t-shirt between the showers.

To get to Wiseman's Br the path/cycleway went through 2 tunnels through the hill.

It was along the road for a little bit from Wisemans Br before getting on to the hardcore path to Amroth.

Amroth had sustained damage during the last storm and a digger was still putting the pebbles back while a major operation was required to reinstate the sea wall.

Amroth also marks the end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path with it's 548 gates/stiles along the 180 miles.

With plenty of time I had been taking a relaxed pace and with the easy path had covered 12 miles in well under 5 hours.

The final 4 miles were a different story, it was still a good path but it had a lot of drops & climbs, a couple of which were very long and steep. I had to work hard and it took me over 2 hours to get to Pendine.

With 40 minutes to wait for the bus I had a coffee in the Point Cafe.

I am having to leave the coast tomorrow as the Rivers Taf and Towy have to be walked round. A lot of road walking and no scenic coastline.

I'll need to get used to it as it may be a while before I'm back on thr coast proper.
