Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Altnaharrie to Gairloch (14)
1237 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 75. Sat 22nd Jun 2013 - Beinn Ghobhlach to Badrallach, 9 miles (1237 miles walked)

The headland
There were showers through the night but it was a dry start to the day.

The route was straightforward and the heather was short which made the going relatively easy.

Scoraig
Looking down on Scoraig it was difficult to spot the houses, the only clue to the existence of a house was a small wind turbine.

I only realized the other day that one obvious feature of this northwest coast so far has been the absence of wind turbines, in stark contrast to Orkney.

Scoraig lighthouse
Coming down off the hill I was surprised to see a small lighthouse almost surrounded by trees.

It has been turned into an information centre about Scoraig. Population is 70 and there is a small school, there is no road, just an access track to the jetty, no services which is why they all have a wind turbine to charge batteries with a converter to provide mains electricity.

The coastline to Badrallach
Scoraig and Beinn Ghobhlach
Supplies came across by boat or are carried on your back from Badrallach, so there is obviously a good footpath.

The doorbell
The houses tended to be close but scattered and generally hidden by trees. Often the only access was a grassy path from the track.

At one gate, with no house visible, there was a doorbell with a sign saying "Please Ring, someone will appear soon".

When the track ended a good footpath continued.

Footpath to Badrallach
The visitors log book in the lighthouse showed that quite a number had walked here from Badrallach.

The path was well constructed and there were tyre tracks of a trail/motor bike all the way even though it was very steep going up through the cliff face.

When I got to Badrallach it was only 12.00, a couple of hours earlier than I thought it might have been, due to the easy walking.

I hadn't planned on stopping here but there was a good small campsite so I treated myself by finishing early and having a relaxing afternoon.

Only 9 miles and an easy day tomorrow to get to Badcaul where I hope to catch the bus from on Monday morning.
