Log No 6. Thu 4th Apr 2013 - Staithes to Redcar, 13 miles (105 miles walked)

The route ahead from Staithes
Well, the repair job on the tent pole held okay, Mick's son, Andrew, has been in touch with the tent manufacturer and got them to send a replacement section which I will hopefully pick up when I get to Newcastle.

The sun was shining as we set off at 08.10, it was very windy but was more or less behind us, still too cold for shorts though.

Cattle on the Cleveland Way
We had a minor detour after an hour when we found a small herd of cows on the path. Not wanting to risk pushing past the calves we climbed into the field to get by them, in places it was only 5m between the fence and cliff edge. Presumably the farmer had put them out for the longer grass.

Skinningrove
It was to be a shorter day today, campsites were getting fewer the closer we were coming to the built up areas of the NE and the only convenient one was at Redcar.

When we dropped down into Skinningrove we took a break and had half our lunch.

Iron Sculpture
Leaving Skinningrove we climbed steadily and near the top of Warsett Hill there was a sculpture which was likely representative of the iron works.

Looking over Saltburn towards Redcar
Then it was an easy descent down into Saltburn-by-the-Sea for 12.00.

We considered walking 4 miles along the beach to Redcar, the tide had turned and was on it's way out. After a few minutes the hard sand gave way to shingle so we abandoned the idea and went back up onto the land.

It was a gradual descent to Marske-by-the-Sea then we followed the side of the main road to the start of the promenade at Redcar.

We went to the tourist information office to check on the campsite we were aiming for, and just as well we did for it no longer took tents. The tourist office could find nowhere close to Redcar to pitch a tent.

After weighing up all our options we decided to stay put and got a discounted rate in the Clarendon Hotel.

It will be a hard day tomorrow, a lot of road walking through industrial areas but we do have a campsite booked.
