Log No 23. Sun 21st Apr 2013 - Pittenweem to St Andrews, 19 miles (411 miles walked)

With it being Sunday the first bus I could catch was 9.45 so that gave me time to write up yesterdays log as I never had time last night with the late finish.

I had been told it would rain today and certainly it was very overcast but it was still dry, even so it was still cold so I did set off in my waterproofs at 10.00.

After leaving Pittenweem I was soon at Anstruther then the low path along the shore to Crail. These low paths were pretty much the same all day, splattered with loose rock and debris, not over easy to walk on.

I stopped for my first break at Crail, it was 12.00.

After reaching Fife Ness I turned a corner and started heading northweast, the weather had improved and the waterproofs came off.

There were still plenty of golf courses along the coast today and where the path had been eroded signs redirected walkers to use the beach until the next sign. These beaches were quite often rocky.

I had my second break at 12.10 in the coast car park at Kingsbarns.

A couple of miles further on I had the biggest detour of the day as I went up along the side of Kenly Water to the footbridge, this was a pleasant change and didn't add too much to the walk.



The detour got back to the coast by Buddo Rock, an unusually eroded lump of rock just off the cliff.

I had just finished taking a photo of it when I met a fellow hiker coming towards me and we both looked at each others charity tee-shirt.

I had the advantage because I knew of another coming towards me but I never expected to actually meet him, it was long odds and in fact if I had been half an hour later we might have missed each other as he was just contemplating heading inland onto roads to make up some time.

The final stretch into St Andrews was slightly arduous with lots of up & downs and twists & turns and I eventually arrived at 17.15.

By the time I walked to the bus station the Number 95 was just pulling out, luckily he stopped for me otherwise I had an hours wait.

Only 19 miles today but they felt hard won.
