Coasting Round Britain

30th March 2013 to 12th July 2014
Rock to Botallack (45)
3962 out of 5630 miles completed

Log No 260. Sat 1st Mar 2014 - Wadebridge to Porthcothan, 18 miles (3962 miles walked)

Most unusually I overslept this morning, I was awake at 05.20 and the next I knew it was 06.45. Battling the wind must have taken a lot out of me, that and not hitting the Lights Out switch until after midnight.

Luckily I was only a 10 minute drive away from where I was to start walking from in Wadebridge and I was underway by 08.00.

Padstow
Well I got what I asked for, no wind, I should have been greedy and asked for sunshine as well but no rain was a bonus.

I took the Camel Trail out of Wadebridge, a 5 mile flat cycleway by the river to Padstow.

Looking back to Stepper Point
At Padstow I picked up the Coast Path again, it assumes everyone uses the ferry to get to the other side.

The tide was going out and there was plenty of sand to walk across Harbour Cove rather than through the dunes.

I came back up onto the path at Hawker's Cove to get to Stepper Point.

Back on the clifftop it was a 3 mile walk to Trevone, there were a lot of people on the path but no-one was inclined to stop for a chat.

Trevone and the Round Hole
The Round Hole

In the field coming into Trevone there is a large deep depression, shown as "Round Hole" on the map, it is quite a distance from the sea but at the bottom of the depression a hole/tunnel leads out to the sea.

The clouds were breaking up and the sun was putting in an appearance.

Surf School at Harlyn Bay
All the bays round this part of the coast are sandy and easily accessible and with today being a Saturday a lot of people were making the most of the good weather. Harlyn Bay in particular was very busy with surfers and a large group of beginners was receiving tuition.

I cut across the beach at Harlyn then got back up onto the path to go round Trevose Head.

Porthcothan
Spring has crept up on me with the flowers coming out, snowdrops, crocus, daffodils, daisies, dandelions and others that I can't name. Gorse has been in bloom for a while and Red Campion I have seen all year round. Frogs have laid their spawn and the birds are pairing up.

The walking today has been more of a stroll with no strenuous climbs and I finished the day at Porthcothan at 14.20, 18 easy miles.
