Log No 341. Tue 10th Jun 2014 - Hollesley to Orford, 17 miles (5265 miles walked)

The footpath along the River Ore
I'm getting the hang of these later starts now, leaving the campsite at 08.00, it was another sunny day with little wind and it was very warm.

I had a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and a pair of socks hanging off the back of my rucsac to dry out after washing them last night.

I walked back through Hollesley then by HM Young Offender Institution to get back to the coast, I thought it was the coast but it was actually the River Ore.

This river starts out as River Alde then is renamed River Ore from Orford and it separates the 10 mile long spit of land, Orford Ness, from the mainland. Orford Ness starts at Aldeburgh.

Butley Ferry
After a couple of miles the Suffolk Coast Path turns north to follow Butley River where, just upstream from where it joins River Ore, there is a small passenger ferry across to the other side.

Dave at Butley Ferry
This ferry is a rowing boat manned by volunteers, I couldn't have used it even if I'd wanted to as it only operates on weekends and bank holidays in the summer.

Footpath to Butley Mills
The footpath continued inland a bit from the river going through farmland to get to the head of the river at Butley Mills.

The SCP briefly joined the B1084 at Chillesford where I escaped the heat for a bit by stopping for, yes you've guessed it, a pot of tea.

With no footpath shown down the east side of Butley River the SCP followed footpaths heading straight for Orford after going thriugh Sudbourne Park.

I turned off just before Orford to get back onto the embankment along the River Ore and followed it into Orford, a welcome breeze had picked up which helped to cool me down a bit.

Looking to Orford

I stopped at the Quay in Orford to finish off my lunch before going to find the village store.

The shop was quite expensive and didn't have half of what I wanted so I won't be able to make up any sandwiches for tomorrow and I wasn't going to pay £1.99 for a pork pie either. It is a very short walk tomorrow anyway.

The campsite at High House Fruit Farm was 2 miles north of Orford and I got there at 15.15. The owner waived the site fee and she even knew Withernsea, having been brought up in the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Another 17 warm miles.
